History of Storage and Self-Storage

The furniture storage concept was born in the UK during the Industrial Revolution, when families migrating to cities needed to temporarily store their belongings. The first 'furniture repositories' appeared in London around 1850.

In Spain, furniture storage arrived with traditional moving companies at the beginning of the 20th century. Barcelona, as a port and industrial city, was a pioneer in offering this service for goods in transit and families emigrating to America.

The self-storage explosion arrived from the United States in the 90s. The American 'storage units' model was adapted to the Spanish market, and Barcelona saw its first self-storage centers open at the turn of the millennium.

Today, the storage sector in Spain bills more than 400 million euros annually. Barcelona concentrates the highest number of facilities due to space scarcity in urban flats and the high cost per square meter.

Storage Logistics

A professional storage facility operates as a specialized logistics center. Goods reception follows a strict protocol: detailed inventory, photographs, weighing and location assignment using warehouse management software (WMS).

Space distribution is critical for efficiency. Furniture is stored vertically when possible, mattresses horizontally, and small objects on shelving. The goal is to maximize useful volume without compromising preservation.

Climate control is fundamental. A quality storage facility maintains temperature between 15-20°C and relative humidity of 50-60%. Sensors constantly monitor these variables and alert of any deviation.

Traceability is total: each package has a unique code that allows locating it in seconds. When the client requests access or return, the system indicates the exact location and the team prepares delivery efficiently.

Regulations

Storage is regulated by the Civil Code as a deposit contract (arts. 1758-1784). The depositary (the company) must preserve things with the diligence of a good family father and return them when the depositor requests.

Facilities must comply with fire safety regulations (CTE DB-SI), accessibility (CTE DB-SUA), and environmental protection. Barcelona centers require specific municipal activity license.

GDPR applies to processing clients' personal data. Inventory, photographs and contact data must be adequately protected. The company must inform about processing and obtain consent.

In case of prolonged non-payment, the Civil Procedure Law regulates the procedure for selling deposited goods, which requires prior judicial authorization. Goods cannot be disposed of unilaterally.

Tips for Optimal Storage

Clean before storing

Furniture, clothes and appliances must be clean and dry. Dirt attracts pests and moisture generates mold.

Disassemble what you can

Tables, beds and wardrobes take up less space disassembled. Keep screws in labeled bags.

Use adequate protection

Breathable covers for upholstered furniture, never airtight plastic. Blankets for wood. Bubble wrap for glass.

Don't stack excessively

Heavy furniture at bottom, light on top. Never put weight on upholstery or mattresses that can deform.

Leave access aisles

If you'll need to access specific things, organize so you can reach them without moving everything.

Make photographic inventory

Photograph everything before storing. Useful for insurance and to remember what you have stored.

Empty appliances

Fridges and washing machines completely empty and dry. Leave doors ajar to avoid odors.

Protect documents

Important papers in watertight plastic boxes or metal filing cabinets. Never directly in cardboard on floor.
